Magick Without Spending, Day One
Leaf through the pages of a spell book and you will see lists of ingredients, big things and small. From a comb to the use of a horse. From ribbons and coloured paper to gold rings. It all has its magickal uses, of course, but there is so much stuff! So many things! And if you don’t have them hanging around your home, what choice do you have but to buy them?
As of today, I am starting a year without unnecessary spending. Obviously, I still buy food and replace clothes when they wear out, but the other stuff? The books, the ribbons, the candles? All that is going to stop.
Luckily I have a huge stockpile of magickal books I already own but have not read. I have a bag of mixed ribbons and as many tea light candles as I could ever want. I have a medium-sized collection of crystals that I’ve already decided not to add to for ethical reasons.
The challenge is to make the most of what I already have and to see what I can find/make. What makes the challenge particularly tough is the world of social media, particularly Instagram, showing me so many beautiful things that witches are doing out there. The spell jars, the witchy decor ideas, the potions and charms. Everything looks so gorgeous, so lush, and so within reach. All I have to do is buy…
This year I am not going to buy those things. I am not going to give in. My inspiration comes from a book I’m reading called The Anti-Consumerist Druid by Katrina Townsend. In the first half of the book, Katrina describes her struggle with a shopping addiction and how she wanted to spend less and become more environmentally friendly. I’m in a similar place and would like to kick things off with a year without (unnecessary) spending.
Katrina’s year was bumpy and involved falling off the wagon in big ways and small. Let’s see how I go now that I’ve set myself a similar challenge. Let’s go!
